Andrew Barton - Chair of Governors

Born in Chelmsford, I attended KEGS going on to study Metallurgy at Imperial College, London. During my early business life, wishing to broaden my outlook and opportunities, I studied for my accounting qualification. The combination of science and business disciplines enabled me to follow a career managing businesses in Nigeria and South Africa, America, New Zealand, Australia and Britain. For the last few years I have been an 'at home' Dad to James, a former pupil at St Mary's school. My skills in the kitchen have developed and, as a counterbalance, I have re-discovered cycling.  Father also to two grown-up sons, I have three grandchildren, one at primary school, who all live in the West Country.  Since coming to live in Shenfield in 2000, I have been an active member of St Mary's Church and for several years a member of the PCC. This involvement led to my appointment as a PCC Foundation school governor in 2011.

 

 

David Churchill - Vice Chair of Governors

With my wife Gill and son Oliver, we moved from South-East London to Shenfield in Summer 2011. Oliver started in the Foundation year at St Mary's School in September 2012. I used to be a languages teacher in schools in the UK and abroad, and have a Masters Degree in Education. I now work at the Department for Education on post-16 education and skills, and have also worked on the academies programme, school leadership and school funding.

 

 

David Bryant

I have been involved with St Mary's Church for the last 10 years and was  invited to be a PCC-appointed governor in 2013. I serve on the Resources Committee, where I seek to add value from my experiences gained in over 20 years of management. My youngest son started in St Mary's School in 2011, while my oldest son left in 2014 after a happy and successful time to move into senior school. For most of my career I have worked in IT, specialising in the financial services sector and I hold a senior position at Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

 

 

Ben Debenham

I am serving my third four-year term as a Diocesan Board of Education governor. I was previously Chair of the Governing Body during the transition to Academy status and have headed the Premises & Access Committee in the past, overseeing major budget improvements such as classroom extensions and the installation of the new boiler system. I have a B.Sc. in Quantity Surveying and run my own residential property development company.

 

 

Laura Judd

I joined the friendly school community of St Mary's in 2001, having previously taught in Walton on the Naze for four years. I attended the school as a child, so it was a dream come true to be offered the job by the then head teacher, Mrs Hutton. I was initially appointed as a Year 5 teacher and the P.E. coordinator. Most of you will be aware of my passion for sport. I am incredibly proud of the sporting successes of the school and of the variety of sports we offer our children. More recently I was also put in charge of Maths. After several years teaching in Year 5, I was asked to take on the challenge of Year 6 and I think I have now become part of the fixtures and fittings in the upper school! I enjoy working with the older children immensely. They provide much banter. I love preparing them for the transition to secondary school and watching them mature into confident, well-rounded young adults. Before completing my P.G.C.E. year at Aberystwyth University, I studied for a B.Sc. (Hons) Psychology degree, which has helped me to better understand and communicate with my pupils. As a Teacher Governor, I strive to ensure there is a mutual respect and understanding between staff and governors working together to make a positive contribution to all involved with St Mary's.

 

Father Chris Mann

I have been Rector of Shenfield since 3rd December 2016, prior to which I was working as the Anglican Chaplain in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, on the border between the United Arab Emirates and Oman. I was ordained in 1986 and served my curacy in Worcester. Since then I have worked in a variety of posts: Minor Canon and Sacrist of St Paul’s Cathedral, Rector of Upminster, Personal Chaplain to the Right Reverend Laurie Green when he was Bishop of Bradwell, and Vicar of Christchurch in Dorset. I read Topographic Science at Glasgow University, graduating in 1979, and trained for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge. I am married to Heather who was born and bred in Shenfield and attended St Mary’s School. Between us we have five children all of whom are now adults.

 

Amelia Mauger

I am a parent governor and was elected for a 4-year period in January 2013. I have thee children who currently attend St Mary's School and I work part time at a Big 4 Accountancy firm. I became a Governor as I am keen to bring to the governing body my energy, constructive challenge and enthusiasm to support the school in continuing to provide an outstanding Christian education, and in continuing to be ambitious for all children to get the best out of their time at St Mary's.

Gary Nott

I am the father of three young children and married to Suzanne. I have been a head teacher for over 20 years and the executive head teacher of two schools during that time. Beyond my school, I have delivered training to all layers of school staff and to governors too. Writing is a hobby and I am fortunate enough to have been published. My last book was a novel aimed at children aged 9-11 and my next book is a collection of short stories with a Christian dimension for use at assembly time. I am passionate about the circus and my children have seen many performances – as has a long-suffering Mrs Nott! I am delighted to be serving as a governor of what I consider to be an excellent school.

 

 

 

Rachel Patel

I became involved with St Mary's Church when I moved to the area in 2007 and became linked to the school when my son started in 2011. I was invited to become a PCC governor in 2013, the same year that my daughter started school. I am also a member of the school's PFA (St Mary's Parents and Friends Association), organising the childrens' discos. I have a biochemistry degree and D.Phil. from St John's College, Oxford University and my last job, before becoming a full-time mum, was Senior Editor on the science journal Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology.

 

 

Ann Plumstead

For over 30 years I have been involved with St Mary's School and Church. My children and siblings attended the school in the 1980s. I have been a governor for more than 20 years and I have taught the children my specialist subjects, Art and R.E. passing on my skills and knowledge to enable them to create their own world of art. I am a long standing member of the Brentwood Art Society, where my work is created, made and designed in a variety of media. I attended St Martin's School of Art studying textiles and fashion. Leading the St Mary's Sunday School for 30 years gave me the opportunity to create children's artwork for the church, my red flame designs appear on the Pentecostal soft furnishings set. I feel a lifelong connection with St Mary's School and am delighted to work with the team to look after the spiritual and education wellbeing of the children.

 

 

Rachel Willson

Since graduating with an honours degree in Psychology, and a post graduate certificate in Child Protection I have spent a number of years accumulating a wealth of experience working with children and young people in various settings. I started my career as an Assistant Psychologist supporting vulnerable youth offenders in a custodial setting. I have also worked in a Local Authority Policy and Strategy Department and have led a Local Authority School Attendance team, dedicated to improving borough-wide school attendance and preventing pupil disengagement. In the latter role I was also responsible for matters relating to child employment ensuring the safety and well being of part-time working children.

I have been involved with St Mary's Church since I moved to the area in 2008. I am currently a stay-at-home mum to two girls, Holly and Ava. The eldest, Holly, joined St Mary's School in 2015. Since then I have been actively involved with the school's PFA, helping to organise numerous fundraising events.
