What do we want our children to achieve in maths?

All pupils will experience a creative and ambitious mathematics curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which ignites curiosity and prepares them for future life. Pupils will acquire a deep, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures which they can use in real life contexts. The programmes of study are organised into distinct domains, but pupils will make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. Our mastery approach is underpinned by the belief that all pupils can achieve and be successful.

    Why is maths important?

The teaching of maths in primary school is vital because it provides children with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to solve problems, think logically, and understand the world around them. Early mathematical learning forms the foundation for success in later education and everyday life.

Some key reasons why teaching maths is important include:

    • Building problem-solving skills: Maths encourages children to think critically, identify patterns, and find different ways to solve problems.
    • Developing logical reasoning: Children learn to explain their thinking, justify their answers, and make connections between mathematical ideas.
    •  Supporting learning across the curriculum: Mathematical skills are used in subjects such as science, geography, design and technology, and computing.
    •  Preparing children for everyday life: Maths is essential for everyday tasks such as telling the time, handling money, measuring, cooking, budgeting, and interpreting information.
    • Building confidence and resilience: As children develop mathematical understanding, they gain confidence in tackling challenges and learn that mistakes are part of the learning process.
    • Preparing children for future education, careers and life skills e.g. booking a train ticket - having an understanding of cost, distance and time or filling in a tax return (pupil voice!)
